Millennials and Social Media Addiction

Millennials having grown up with technology that makes for easy access to information can become addicted to that social media just like any drug.

Seeing someone with their head in their phone looking at the screen intently has become commonplace these days almost anywhere a person goes. But there is a risk to those that wake up in the morning and go to their phone or tablet first, before even saying, “good morning” to their spouse.

While it is common in society these days, it also is looked at more and more like an addiction. The biological basis for addiction to drugs or alcohol, and an addiction to technology and social media are very similar. It becomes an ingrained habit after a point, and the person will be addicted to using that phone or tablet just like a person dying for a drink.

Millennials are more of a target for this type of behavior than any other age group. The reason for this is simple. People learn and live out what is going on around them when they are growing up. So, this technology and connectedness that social media provides are expected, almost required, for millennials. That’s why they become the most at-risk age group for a social media addiction.

Now it is obvious that social media is almost essential for working and keeping up to date with friends and family these days. It’s when it gets out of balance, when it becomes all consuming of time and energy does it become a problem. That’s when social media abuse becomes an addiction.
